The Wednesday URI Fun Run

The run put on by the South County YMCA begins with a 1 mile warm up run and finishes with a 3 and 5 mile timed run.

This is usually a tempo run day for the group where the goal is to run a little short of race effort.   But what makes the fun run fun?  I would guess spending time with teammates and other members of the running community.

Below we see some pictures from last week's run.

“Every morning in Africa, a Gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion. Every morning a Lion wakes up.  It knows it must outrun the slowest Gazelle or it will starve. It doesn’t matter whether you are a Lion or a Gazelle… when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.”          ~ Author Unknown

            Running "Erins" in the morning

Erin Corcoran and Erin McManus get things going with a morning run.  These runs will continue throughout the Summer organized by Erin McManus and Peyton Wallace Monday through Thursday at North Kingstown High School at 7AM.  The Erins will be at Fort Wetherill later for another run and team picnic.

The Jamestown Half Marathon Volunteer Day

“The highest of distinctions is service to others.”
                                                                                                   -- King George IV

We had a great crew of volunteers come out from the team to support The Jamestown Half Marathon.

The group had to get up early in order to meet at the park and ride in North Kingstown before 6AM.  This isn't an easy thing to do on a Summer day when we are used to getting a couple of hours more sleep and meeting in Goddard Park for a Saturday morning run.

But the North Kingstown Cross Country Team made it look easy and had fun doing it also!!!

There were many compliments from runners in the race and organizers alike as NKXC manned two water stations along the route with enthusiam.

Former NKXC standouts Rob Craven, Allison Lomas, and Mike Wilkinson ran in the race along with Coach McNeiece.   Top runner Aisha McAdams who will be attending Stonehill College this Fall volunteered to help out.  All of these former NK athletes will be representing their collegiate cross country teams in the Fall.  Now that's dedication!!

NKXC at its best!!!

Bethany Nunnery just back from 'Jersey' with the handoff to the lead runner in the race!!  She delivers with confidence because she has done this before.

The Desert 5k!!!

"The more I run, the more talented I get."
                                                                   - - Bob Hodge

A little over a year ago this course was officially measured backward and forward to insure accuracy by a registered U.S. Track and Field course measurer.

It's difficult to believe how slow the times are for a 5k but if you've run the course you would understand.

A few brave souls came out for the race in the desert yesterday.  This is the third time the team has had an opportunity to run on this course and the fifth time there has been a race on what is most likely the most difficult 5k course in New England and for all we know anywhere.

Congratulations to Dallin Smith with a time of 22:45 establishing a new course record and becoming the only person to crack 23 minutes on the course.   Robbie Rocchio finished closely behind for second followed by some old guy.

Congratulations also goes to Marissa McPhillips the Narragansett runner with a time of 28:35 in what is thought to be the current women's course record. Coach McCaffrey is the only other runner on record to break 30 minutes. Yes, this is a very difficult course!  Kate Thomas took second place followed by Caroline Rocchio and the newest addition to the team Jamie Hazel.

The guys and girls warm up with some dynamics.

Here we see Marissa leading a pack of runners up Paradise Hill.

Dallin Smith leads the front pack up Paradise Hill.

The group leaves Paradise Hill and heads in the direction of Hashbrown Hill.

Monday Practices in Jamestown

 July 1, 2013

Yet another tropical day which has been the norm in the early 2013 Summer.  It made for another great training run from Fort Wetherill in Jamestown.

Here we see the group out doing dynamics before setting out on the run.
