The 2nd Annual NKXC Ekiden Relay and
                          Senior Night Under the Lights

North Kingstown Ekiden Relay

“Under the Lights” @ NK Stadium

A new tradition has begun over the past two years in the form of a relay and night where the athletes and families gather to honor our senior athletes.

The Ekiden is a relay race originating in Japan. Unlike the traditional track relays, an Ekiden is run over a much greater distance with each team’s runner wearing a cloth sash (tasuki) suspended from the shoulder across the chest. The sash is passed from one teammate to the next, like the baton in a regular relay.

The Ekiden Relay, and the name itself, has spread from Japan to different parts of the world including China, Kenya, Tanzania, and now North Kingstown! The first Ekiden Relay was run in 1917, the 50th anniversary of the transfer of Japan’s capital from the ancient city of Kyoto to Tokyo.

 General Race Rules:

* Teams must wear uniforms and…

·       Runners must hand over their sash (tasuki) to their teammate within the exchange area.
·       It is your team captains’ responsibility to make sure all team members are ready in the exchange zone area for their respective hand-off.
·       Runners/spectators should not enter the course or obstruct any of the participants.
·       All runners must run the entire race course with a fair effort.
·       All runners and supporters must display courtesy and sportsmanship at all times.
Attempt to have teams of approximately 6 runners; the distance of each relay leg can be the same or meet officials can designate varying  distances.
